Introduce
Kid Icarus on the NES is an action-adventure game that blends platforming elements with light RPG mechanics. Players control Pit, an angel, on a quest to rescue the goddess Palutena from the evil Medusa.
The gameplay in Kid Icarus is divided into three main screen types: vertical scrolling, horizontal scrolling, and fortress levels. In the vertical scrolling stages, Pit ascends, dodging enemies and collecting hearts (the game's currency) and various items. The horizontal scrolling stages are more traditional platforming levels, where Pit navigates treacherous terrain, battles monsters, and finds his way to the end of the stage.
A unique aspect of Kid Icarus lies in its fortress levels. These are intricate mazes where the player must search for a "Sacred Chamber" to receive special weapons or magic, and then a "Boss Chamber" to confront the boss. Navigating these fortresses requires memory and exploration.
Pit's primary weapon is his bow and arrow. Players can collect power-ups to enhance his arrows, such as the Feather Arrow (longer range), Fire Arrow (more damage), or a Shield (blocks enemy projectiles). The collected hearts are used to purchase useful items at various shops. There are different types of shops, from regular stores selling common items like a Mallet (to break obstacles), Life Potion, or Credit Card, to training rooms where Pit can upgrade his health or attack power. There's even a secret "Black Market" offering special goods.
Kid Icarus is known for its high difficulty, requiring patience and skill. The game's ending can vary depending on the player's performance, including their score and items collected, providing an incentive for replayability and further exploration.
