In Kaettekita! Gunjin Shougi - Nanya Sore!, players engage in a digital version of the popular Japanese strategy board game Gunjin Shogi, often compared to Stratego.
Gameplay revolves around strategy and deduction. Each player commands an army composed of various unit types such as generals, tanks, infantry, spies, and even mines. A key feature is that opponent's pieces are hidden; you only discover the type of an enemy unit when your pieces engage, creating an element of surprise and tension.
The primary objective is to capture the opponent's headquarters or flag. Players must strategically move their pieces across a grid-based board, attempting to outmaneuver and eliminate enemy units. When two pieces clash, the higher-ranked piece wins and removes the lower-ranked one. However, there are exceptions: for instance, a spy can defeat the highest-ranking general, or a mine will destroy any piece that lands on it (except for a minesweeper).
Before each match, players arrange their pieces in a designated area of the board. This initial setup is crucial as it determines the opening defensive and offensive strategies. The ability to read your opponent and adapt your tactics based on information gathered through engagements is key to victory. With its characteristic 8-bit NES graphics, the game offers a classic yet challenging strategic experience.
