Genpei Touma Den - Computer Boardgame is a unique digital board game for the NES, adapted from the popular arcade action game of the same name. The game thrusts players into the historical Genpei War setting of Japan, blending elements of mythology and the supernatural. The primary objective is to move your character across a board-game style map representing various regions of Japan, conquering territories, defeating enemy generals, and ultimately vanquishing the main adversaries to complete your quest.

Gameplay revolves around rolling dice to determine movement on the map. Each square on the board can trigger a different event. Players might encounter battles, find shops to purchase items, visit shrines for healing or blessings, or fall into traps. Battles typically occur in a turn-based combat format, where players need to employ strategy to choose between attacking, defending, or using special abilities. Some battles might be simplified mini-games requiring quick reflexes.

Players primarily control Kagekiyo, a resurrected warrior seeking revenge. In addition to Kagekiyo, other characters might join or be unlocked, each possessing unique stats and abilities. Character attributes like health, attack power, and defense can be upgraded through experience or by purchasing equipment. Resource management, including money and items, is crucial for overcoming increasingly difficult challenges.

Strategic elements are paramount as players must decide their movement path, prioritize which objectives to tackle first, and how to prepare for confrontations with powerful foes such as Minamoto no Yoritomo or Yoshitsune, alongside numerous yokai and demons. The game successfully combines the appeal of a board game with the epic narrative and distinctive atmosphere of the Genpei Touma Den series.
