Introduce
Gaplus, also known as Galaga 3 in some markets, is a classic fixed-shooter arcade game developed by Namco, serving as a direct sequel to the highly successful Galaga. In Gaplus, players control a single fighter spaceship at the bottom of the screen, with the primary objective of destroying all enemy vessels that appear from the top and sides of the screen.
Gaplus's gameplay retains many core elements from its predecessor but introduces unique new mechanics. The most notable feature is the player's ability to utilize a "Blaster Head," a type of tractor beam, to capture enemy ships. Unlike Galaga, where the player could be captured, here the player actively captures enemy ships. These captured enemies can then be merged into the player's formation, significantly boosting firepower. Players can collect multiple enemy ships to form a more powerful squadron, allowing for multiple streams of shots simultaneously.
The game features a variety of different enemy types, each with unique flight patterns and attack behaviors, requiring players to exhibit quick reflexes and strategic thinking. Additionally, Gaplus introduces new power-up items dropped by specific special enemies, including "Hyper" which increases the spaceship's movement speed, "Side Fighter" which provides an additional ship firing from the sides, and the "Blaster Head" for executing the enemy capture mechanic.
The levels in Gaplus are divided into various "Waves." After every few Waves, players will encounter "Formation Challenge" or "Bonus Stage" rounds, where enemy ships fly in complex patterns without attacking, allowing players to focus on destroying them for high bonus points. The vibrant 2D graphics and distinctive 80s sound design contribute to Gaplus's timeless appeal, making it one of the most memorable arcade titles.
