Introduce
In Dig Dug, players control the titular character, Dig Dug, a brave miner, with the objective of eliminating all monsters on screen. You will dig horizontal and vertical tunnels through the underground soil.
There are two main types of monsters: Pooka, round creatures with goggles, and Fygar, dragons capable of breathing fire. To defeat monsters, you can use your air pump. By approaching a monster and continuously pumping air (holding the action button), they will inflate until they explode.
Alternatively, you can utilize the large rocks scattered throughout the screen. When you dig soil from underneath a rock, it will wobble and after a short delay or once all supporting soil is removed, it will fall. If a falling rock hits a monster, they are instantly crushed, granting higher bonus points. You can use this strategy to defeat multiple monsters at once.
Monsters can move through the tunnels you've dug, and sometimes they can turn into 'ghosts' to move through undug soil, but only if they cannot find a direct path to you. If Fygar is at the same height as you and unobstructed by soil, it can breathe fire, posing a danger to you.
Points are awarded based on the number of monsters defeated and the depth at which you defeat them (deeper yields more points). After dropping two rocks, a vegetable bonus item will appear in the center of the screen for you to collect, granting extra points. Each level requires you to eliminate all monsters. You have three lives, and the game ends when you run out of lives.
