Introduce

Cocoron is a side-scrolling platformer developed by K.C.E. Tokai and published by Taito for the Famicom (NES) in Japan in 1991. The most distinctive feature of Cocoron lies in its custom character creation system.

Before starting each stage, players can choose and combine different body parts such as heads, bodies, arms, and legs to create their own unique character. Each part grants specific attributes and abilities. For example, certain leg types might allow for higher jumps, while some arm types could provide stronger attacks or longer range. Experimenting and finding the optimal combination for each stage is key to success.

The core gameplay of Cocoron involves navigating through stages filled with obstacles and enemies, collecting items, and defeating area bosses. Stages are diverse, ranging from jungles and volcanoes to strange architectural structures. Players need to utilize jumping skills, attacks, and the special abilities of their created character to overcome challenges.

Cocoron's graphics are considered quite detailed and vibrant compared to other NES games of its era. The in-game music is also catchy and fits the adventurous atmosphere. Although never released outside of Japan, Cocoron has become a hidden gem discovered and loved by retro game enthusiasts thanks to its innovative concept and engaging gameplay.
