Introduce

Championship Lode Runner is a renowned puzzle platformer game released for the NES console in Japan. This version is particularly known for its extremely high difficulty compared to other Lode Runner iterations. The primary objective in the game is to collect all the gold bars scattered throughout each level and then escape through the unlocked exit. Players control a small character capable of moving left, right, up, down, and digging holes in the ground.

Each level in Championship Lode Runner is designed as an intricate maze with multiple tiers, ladders, ropes, and diggable brick blocks. The challenge arises from players having to contend with enemies known as "Monks" (or "Guards") who continuously move across the screen. If touched by an enemy, the player loses a life. To pass or temporarily incapacitate enemies, players can dig holes in their path. Enemies will fall into the hole and be trapped for a short period, allowing the player to pass or collect gold. However, if an enemy remains trapped for too long in a hole, they will escape and might carry a gold bar if they fell onto one.

A distinctive feature of Championship Lode Runner is its 50 meticulously designed levels that demand precise calculation for every step. There is no room for error. Sometimes, players need to dig a hole for an enemy to fall into, then wait for them to escape to re-dig that same hole and continue moving. Digging holes can also be used to create paths to lower levels or to trap enemies. Players can also dig a hole and fall into it, but must be careful not to trap themselves. Hard brick blocks cannot be dug and often serve as obstacles or support points.

The game features no weapons or direct attack abilities. Everything relies on the ability to dig holes and maneuver skillfully to overcome obstacles and enemies. The combination of puzzle elements, platforming, and time pressure (from continuously moving enemies) creates a tense and engaging gaming experience. This is a game for those who enjoy challenges and want to test their strategic thinking abilities.
