Introduce
In Boulder Dash, players control the protagonist, Rockford, through a series of challenging caves. The primary objective of each level is to collect the required number of diamonds to open the exit portal before time runs out.
Gameplay revolves around digging. Rockford can dig through dirt in four directions. However, he must be careful with overhanging boulders and diamonds. When the dirt beneath a boulder or diamond is dug away, they will fall if nothing supports them from below, or if they fall into an empty space. This core mechanic creates the game's physics-based puzzles.
Players must use strategy to avoid being crushed by falling rocks. Sometimes, intentionally dropping rocks is necessary to clear a path or to eliminate enemies. Boulders can also be pushed horizontally if there are no other obstructions next to them. This opens up more complex puzzle-solving possibilities.
Besides rocks and diamonds, Rockford also faces various creatures like butterflies and fireflies. These creatures move in specific patterns and can be destroyed by dropping rocks on them. However, if a butterfly is crushed, it can transform into diamonds, providing additional collectibles.
Each level has a countdown timer, adding pressure to the player. Time management and planning routes are crucial. Boulder Dash requires a combination of logical thinking, quick reflexes, and the ability to foresee physical chain reactions to complete increasingly difficult levels.
