Introduce
Battle of Olympus is a classic action-adventure game for the NES, often compared to Zelda II: The Adventure of Link and certain Castlevania titles due to its blend of world exploration and side-scrolling combat. Players take on the role of Orpheus, a brave Greek hero, embarking on a perilous quest to rescue his beloved Helene, who has been kidnapped by the underworld god Hades.
Orpheus's journey takes players across various mythological lands of ancient Greece, from dense forests and dark caves to ancient cities like Athens and Sparta, and even into the dreaded underworld. The gameplay primarily revolves around exploring interconnected areas and battling a multitude of mythological monsters and creatures such as Minotaurs, Hydras, Medusa, Cyclops, and Harpies. Orpheus wields a sword as his primary weapon and a shield for defense. Throughout the game, players can find upgrades for their sword and shield, as well as other useful items like the Sandals of Hermes, which grant flight, or the magical Lyre of Apollo, used to overcome obstacles.
A crucial element in Battle of Olympus is the interaction with the Olympian gods. Orpheus will encounter and receive aid from deities like Zeus, Apollo, Poseidon, Athena, Hermes, and Hephaestus. These gods can bestow powerful spells upon Orpheus, such as the Fire Spell, Healing Spell, or Shield Spell. To cast spells, players need to collect Ambrosia. Additionally, collecting Olives will restore Orpheus's health.
The game features not only combat but also requires players to solve puzzles and navigate challenging platforming sections. Each new area often requires a specific item or ability to access, creating a clear sense of progression. The game's difficulty is considered quite high, demanding patience and skill from the player. The ultimate goal is to defeat Hades and rescue Helene, bringing peace back to Orpheus's love story.
