Introduce
Adventure Island 4, also known as Takahashi Meijin no Bōken Jima IV, is the final installment in the Adventure Island series released on the NES, marking a significant shift in gameplay compared to its predecessors. Instead of a linear side-scrolling platformer, Adventure Island 4 adopts a non-linear structure, allowing players to freely explore a vast interconnected world reminiscent of the Metroidvania genre.
Players still control Master Higgins, the familiar protagonist, on his quest to rescue kidnapped dinosaurs and his girlfriend. The gameplay focuses on exploration, searching for hidden items, weapons, and dinosaur eggs. Higgins can utilize various weapons such as axes, boomerangs, and even magical items like fireballs. A health bar (HP) replaces the traditional food meter, providing players with a less time-pressured experience.
A prominent feature of the game is the ability to collect and utilize dinosaurs as mounts. Each dinosaur possesses a unique special ability, helping Higgins overcome obstacles or access new areas. For instance, some dinosaurs can swim underwater, fly high, or destroy rock blocks. Finding the right dinosaur is key to unlocking new paths within the game.
The world in Adventure Island 4 is divided into various distinct regions such as jungles, caves, volcanoes, and islands. Players will need to use a map and special items to navigate and find their way. Boss battles are also a crucial part of the game, requiring players to employ strategy and effectively utilize their weapons and dinosaurs. The game encourages players to explore every nook and cranny to uncover secrets, unlock new areas, and complete their mission.
