In Who Wants to Be a Millionaire - 2nd Edition (USA) (GBC), players will experience the thrilling atmosphere of the popular TV quiz show. The primary objective is to correctly answer 15 multiple-choice questions in a row, with each question increasing in prize value, to win the virtual one million dollars.
At the start of the game, players are typically presented with a "Fastest Finger First" question to determine who will proceed to the hot seat. Once in the hot seat, the player embarks on a journey of answering general knowledge questions from various categories such as history, geography, science, sports, pop culture, and more. Each question comes with four possible answers (A, B, C, D), and the player must select the correct one.
The difficulty of the questions progressively increases as the prize money grows. There are two "safe points" in the game: $1,000 and $32,000. If a player correctly answers a question at these safe points, that amount of money is guaranteed, even if they answer the subsequent question incorrectly. If a player answers incorrectly before reaching the first safe point, they leave with nothing.
To assist players in overcoming difficult questions, the game provides three classic lifelines:
Each lifeline can only be used once throughout the game.
- 50:50: Eliminates two incorrect answers, leaving only one correct and one incorrect option.
- Phone-A-Friend: Allows the player to "call" a virtual friend for advice. The friend will offer an answer they believe to be correct.
- Ask The Audience: Polls the virtual audience for their opinion. The audience's votes are displayed as a percentage breakdown of what they believe is the correct answer.
The game's interface on the GBC is designed to be simple yet effective in capturing the essence of the original show, complete with characteristic sound effects for correct answers, incorrect answers, or lifeline usage.
