Pokemon Trading Card Game on Game Boy Color is an RPG-strategy card game hybrid that simulates the experience of playing the physical trading card game. Players assume the role of a young trainer aiming to become the Pokemon Card Champion. The journey begins on Game Island, where there are eight Card Clubs that you must challenge and defeat to collect Card Medals.
The core gameplay revolves around building and customizing your deck. Each deck consists of 60 cards, with different types of cards: Pokemon cards, Energy cards, and Trainer cards. Pokemon cards are at the heart of battles, each having hit points (HP), attacks with energy costs, and sometimes special abilities.
The combat system is turn-based. Each player starts with one active Pokemon and up to five benched Pokemon. The objective is to knock out 6 of the opponent's Pokemon by drawing 6 Prize cards, or to make the opponent run out of Pokemon to put into play, or to make the opponent unable to draw a card at the start of their turn. During their turn, players can attach Energy cards to Pokemon, use Trainer cards to gain an advantage, evolve Pokemon, and attack. Strategy is key; players must consider energy usage, selecting appropriate Pokemon for various situations, and managing the cards in their hand.
Beyond the club battles, players can also trade cards with NPC characters, search for booster packs to expand their collection, and even participate in special tournaments. The game features an extensive card collection system, including cards from the original physical card game sets and some exclusive cards unique to the game version. The ultimate goal is to defeat the Grand Masters and become the Champion. Pokemon Trading Card Game offers a deep and engaging experience for both Pokemon fans and lovers of strategic card games.
