Donkey Kong Land 2 is a classic 2D platformer for the Game Boy (GB/GBC) system, following the success of its SNES counterpart, Donkey Kong Country 2. In this game, players control the duo of Diddy Kong and Dixie Kong on their journey to rescue Donkey Kong from the clutches of King K. Rool. The story begins when King K. Rool kidnaps Donkey Kong and takes him to Crocodile Isle, and Diddy and Dixie's mission is to overcome difficult challenges to save their friend.
The gameplay of Donkey Kong Land 2 focuses on overcoming obstacles, collecting items, and defeating enemies across a variety of diverse levels. Each character possesses unique abilities: Diddy Kong is more agile and can perform an effective cartwheel attack, while Dixie Kong can hover in the air by spinning her ponytail, helping her cross large gaps or reach higher areas. Players can switch between these two characters as needed, making the most of each one's strengths.
The game introduces a range of "Animal Buddies" to assist the player, including Enguarde (swordfish) for underwater levels, Rattly (rattlesnake) for high jumps, Squawks (parrot) for flight, and Clapper (seal) for traversing frozen water. Using the correct Animal Buddy at the right time is key to discovering secrets or overcoming obstacles.
Collectibles in the game include bananas (points), Banana Coins used to buy hints from Cranky Kong or play mini-games, and especially the K-O-N-G letters hidden in each level. Collecting all four letters unlocks a bonus level. Additionally, the game features DK Coins hidden in secret bonus levels, finding all of which is a major challenge for players aiming for 100% completion.
Despite being a Game Boy title, Donkey Kong Land 2 retains the detailed graphics and distinctive music of the series, impressively recreating the atmosphere of Donkey Kong Country 2 on the SNES. The game's difficulty is considered quite high, demanding skill and patience from the player. With challenging levels, secrets to discover, and thrilling boss battles, Donkey Kong Land 2 delivers a deep and engaging platformer experience.
