In Buffy the Vampire Slayer for Game Boy Color, players step into the shoes of Buffy Summers, the chosen vampire slayer, tasked with protecting the town of Sunnydale from malevolent supernatural forces. This is a side-scrolling action-platformer with gameplay focused on combat and exploration.

Buffy can perform various combat maneuvers, including physical attacks like punches and and kicks, as well as utilizing her signature weaponry. Buffy's primary weapon is the wooden stake, used to permanently dispatch weakened vampires. Additionally, players can find and use ranged weapons such as a crossbow to attack enemies from a distance. Other items like holy water or garlic can also be employed to damage or weaken vampires.

Each level in Buffy the Vampire Slayer is designed with multiple areas to explore, from gloomy cemeteries to abandoned buildings. Players must overcome obstacles, solve some simple puzzles, and confront various types of enemies, including vampires, zombies, and other dark creatures. At the end of each level or a series of levels, there is often a challenging boss fight, requiring players to master their skills and discover the opponent's weaknesses.
