Arcade Classic No 1 for Game Boy Color brings two timeless arcade masterpieces, Asteroids and Missile Command, faithfully adapted for on-the-go enjoyment.
In Asteroids, players control a small spaceship in deep space, surrounded by countless asteroids and enemy saucers. The primary objective is to destroy all these threats without colliding with them or being shot. Your spaceship has 360-degree rotation capabilities and can move forward using thrust. When a large asteroid is hit, it breaks into smaller pieces, and you must continue to destroy these until no fragments remain on screen. In addition to asteroids, flying saucers (UFOs) of various sizes sometimes appear; they can shoot randomly or aim directly at your position, adding to the game's difficulty. Players can utilize a hyperspace feature to instantly warp to a different random location, but beware, as you might appear right in the middle of a dangerous asteroid cluster or even self-destruct. The game demands quick reflexes and precise control to achieve the highest score.
Missile Command places players in the role of a defense commander, tasked with protecting six innocent cities from relentless nuclear missile attacks. The screen displays six cities at the bottom and three anti-ballistic missile (ABM) silos in the middle, each with a limited supply of missiles. Enemy missiles will fly from the top of the screen downwards, targeting your cities. Your mission is to control a cursor and fire ABMs from your silos, creating aerial explosions to destroy enemy missiles before they reach their targets. Each explosion has a certain radius, capable of destroying multiple missiles at once. The game ends when all six cities are destroyed. Scores are calculated based on the number of enemy missiles destroyed and the number of cities remaining. As you advance to higher levels, the speed and quantity of enemy missiles will increase significantly, sometimes with additional attack types like bombers or satellites, making the game incredibly intense and demanding quick strategic thinking and split-second decision-making.
