Introduce

Yie Ar Kung-Fu stands as a seminal title in the fighting game genre, establishing many conventions that would become standard. In the game, players assume the role of Oolong, a young martial artist on a quest to become the ultimate Kung-Fu master by defeating a diverse roster of formidable opponents. Each match is a one-on-one confrontation, taking place on a simple yet effective arena.

The control scheme in Yie Ar Kung-Fu was remarkably intuitive yet deep for its time. Players utilize an 8-directional joystick to control Oolong's movement, including walking forward, backward, jumping, and crouching. Combined with two attack buttons, punch and kick, Oolong can execute a wide array of distinct moves. For instance, pressing punch or kick while jumping performs airborne punches/kicks. While standing or moving, combining the joystick with an attack button results in moves like high punches, mid-level punches, low punches, high kicks, mid-level kicks, low kicks, and flying kicks. This varied move set allowed players to strategize their attacks and defenses.

The objective of each round is to defeat all opponents before time runs out or Oolong's health bar depletes. Every opponent in Yie Ar Kung-Fu possesses a unique fighting style and often a distinct weapon, requiring players to adapt and discover effective strategies. Memorable characters include the heavy Buchu, Pole with his long staff, Chain with his flail, Star who throws shurikens, Nuncha wielding nunchaku, Tonfan with quick attacks, Boomerang with his returning projectile, Fan who throws fans, Sword with his blade, Club with his mace, and Fire with his flame-spitting ability. The diversity of enemies keeps the gameplay fresh and challenging.

While the game doesn't feature complex "combos" in the modern fighting game sense, mastering the timing and spacing of Oolong's attacks is crucial for victory. After defeating all 11 initial opponents (5 in the first round and 6 in the second), the game loops with increased difficulty. Points are awarded based on defeating opponents and remaining time/health. Yie Ar Kung-Fu is not merely a fighting game but a test of skill and reflexes, leaving a significant mark on arcade gaming history.
