WWF Superstars is a classic arcade wrestling game developed by Technos Japan in 1989, immersing players in the vibrant world of the World Wrestling Federation (now WWE). The game allows up to two players to engage in simultaneous matches, either one-on-one or as a tag team.
Players can choose from a roster of legendary WWF superstars of the era, including Hulk Hogan, Randy "Macho Man" Savage, Ted DiBiase "The Million Dollar Man", André the Giant, The Honky Tonk Man, Ultimate Warrior, Bret "Hitman" Hart, and "Hacksaw" Jim Duggan. Each wrestler boasts unique moves and signature finishers, reflecting their distinct fighting styles.
The control system in WWF Superstars is straightforward yet effective, utilizing two main buttons: one for punching or grappling (Punch/Grapple) and another for kicking (Kick). By combining these buttons with directional inputs, players can execute various maneuvers such as slams, throwing opponents out of the ring, or performing special finishing moves. Once an opponent is weakened, players can attempt a pinfall or a submission hold to secure victory.
The objective of the game is to progress through a series of single or tag team matches, ultimately facing the Tag Team Champions, typically the duo of Ted DiBiase and André the Giant (The Mega Bucks), to claim the championship belts. The difficulty gradually increases with each match, requiring players to master their skills and strategies to defeat increasingly formidable AI opponents.
