Wonder Boy III - Monster Lair is a unique arcade title that skillfully blends two primary genres: side-scrolling platforming and shoot-'em-up action. Players take on the role of one of two main characters: Wonder Boy (Leo) or Wonder Girl (Priscilla), with the objective of saving the world from an invasion of monstrous forces.
Each level in Wonder Boy III - Monster Lair is distinctly divided into two phases. The first phase is a side-scrolling action platformer. Your character automatically moves forward, while the player controls jumping, attacking, and avoiding obstacles. In this phase, you'll use your default weapon (a sword for Wonder Boy, boomerangs for Wonder Girl) to defeat countless enemies. When enemies are defeated, they may drop coins (referred to as Moneys). These coins are crucial as they allow players to purchase support items, new weapons, or more powerful magic spells from shops that appear along the way. Spells range from powerful fireballs to widespread lightning, helping players overcome difficult challenges.
After completing the platforming section and reaching a special warp portal, the game transitions into the second phase: a horizontal side-scrolling shoot-'em-up level. Your character transforms into a flying creature (a dragon for Wonder Boy or a winged lion for Wonder Girl) and flies through a new area. In this phase, the gameplay completely shifts to a classic shooter, where players control their flight direction and continuously fire projectiles to destroy airborne enemies. The end of each shoot-'em-up segment always culminates in a challenging boss battle, requiring players to master dodging and attacking skills to emerge victorious. Defeating the boss unlocks the next stage.
