Introduce

In Capcom's arcade game Willow (World), players take on the role of one of two main characters: the apprentice sorcerer Willow Ufgood or the brave warrior Madmartigan. The primary goal is to rescue the infant Elora Danan from the evil sorceress Bavmorda, traversing various stages designed based on the plot of the film of the same name.

Willow's gameplay is a side-scrolling beat 'em up with adventure elements. Each character boasts a distinct combat style: Willow utilizes magic for ranged attacks, starting with an energy orb and able to upgrade to more powerful spells like fire, ice, or lightning. Madmartigan, conversely, is a melee warrior, wielding a sword to engage enemies up close. His abilities can also be upgraded, increasing the sword's power and reach.

Players will navigate diverse environments, from dense forests and mysterious caves to perilous castles, confronting a myriad of different enemies ranging from soldiers and monsters to magical creatures. Support items such as health potions, coins, and magic/weapon upgrades often appear after defeating enemies or destroying objects in the environment. Collecting coins allows players to purchase additional health or spells at hidden shops.

Each stage culminates in a challenging boss battle, requiring players to master their skills and discover the opponent's weaknesses. The game supports simultaneous two-player cooperative play, allowing Willow and Madmartigan to team up against the forces of darkness, creating an engaging collaborative experience and enhancing tactical depth. Willow's graphics and sound were highly praised upon its release, contributing to its fantastical adventure atmosphere.
