Introduce
Undercover Cops is an arcade "beat 'em up" game developed by Irem in 1992. The game puts players in the role of three "City Sweepers" or "Undercover Cops," tasked with cleaning up the city from dangerous criminals and gangs. There are three initial characters to choose from: Zan Takahara (a former boxer), Matt Gables (a former rugby player), and Rosa Felmonde (a powerful female cop). Each character possesses unique attacks, speed, and strength attributes.
The gameplay of Undercover Cops follows the traditional side-scrolling format of the "beat 'em up" genre. Players will navigate through various stages, from dilapidated urban streets to abandoned factories, confronting countless common enemies and challenging bosses at the end of each level. Basic attacks include punches, kicks, and jumps. Players can combine attacks to create combos or perform special moves by simultaneously pressing the attack and jump buttons, though this consumes a portion of the character's health. A unique aspect of the game is the ability to pick up and utilize various weapons and environmental objects, such as bricks, tires, garbage cans, and even lamp posts, to attack enemies. This adds variety and tactical depth to the battles.
Enemies in Undercover Cops are diverse, ranging from ordinary thugs to larger, specially-abled opponents. The game is renowned for its detailed graphics, unique art style, and impressive sound effects, creating a dark yet intensely dramatic atmosphere. The game's difficulty is quite high, requiring players to possess skill and patience to overcome the levels. The co-op mode allows two players to join simultaneously, enhancing combat capabilities and providing a better entertainment experience.
