Introduce

Track & Field is a classic arcade sports game developed by Konami, first released in 1983. The primary objective of the game is to simulate a series of track and field events from the Olympic Games, requiring players to demonstrate both rapid button pressing and precise timing.

The game is renowned for its unique and addictive control scheme. Most events require players to continuously and rapidly press two 'run' buttons (typically left and right) to build up their athlete's speed. A third, 'action' button, is used to perform crucial actions like jumping, throwing, or clearing hurdles, demanding accurate timing. This timing not only affects performance but also determines whether the player qualifies for the next round.

Events include:

  • 100m Dash: Mash the run buttons as fast as possible.
  • Long Jump: Mash run, then time the action button press for the jump and optimal angle.
  • Javelin Throw: Mash run, then time the action button press to throw the javelin with the correct angle.
  • 110m Hurdles: Mash run and time the action button press to jump over the hurdles.
  • Hammer Throw: Build momentum by mashing run, then time the action button press to release the hammer.
  • High Jump: Mash run, then time the action button press to jump over the bar and adjust height.

To progress in the game, players must achieve a minimum score or distance in each event to qualify for the next. Failure to qualify results in a game over. Track & Field can be played by one or multiple players, either in an alternating or simultaneous competitive mode, creating a challenging and engaging experience that cemented its status as an arcade sports icon.
