Introduce
Time Fighter is an arcade multidirectional scrolling shooter, renowned for its player's ability to move freely in 360 degrees. In the game, you pilot a modern jet, and your primary mission is to destroy all enemy aircraft that appear from all directions on the screen. The game screen continuously scrolls in the direction of your movement, creating a sense of an expansive world.
The objective of each stage is to eliminate a specific number of enemies. Once this quota is met, a small parachute will appear on the screen. Players need to collect this parachute to trigger a special effect: all remaining on-screen enemies will be instantly destroyed, and you will advance to the next stage. This introduces a minor strategic element, as you must weigh between continuing to shoot down enemies and seeking out the parachute to end the level.
A unique aspect of Time Fighter (and its original, Time Pilot) is its time travel theme. The game transports players through various historical eras. You'll begin with modern jet battles, then journey backward in time to confront World War II fighter planes, classic biplanes, and even prehistoric flying creatures or alien spacecraft. Each era not only changes the enemy types but also features distinct background scenery and color palettes.
Every few regular stages, players will face a boss battle. These bosses are typically massive machines or powerful spacecraft, requiring strategy and patience to defeat. Classic examples include a giant blimp protected by numerous smaller planes, or an alien mothership armed with formidable weapons.
As a conversion running on Galaxian hardware, Time Fighter might exhibit minor differences in graphics and sound compared to Konami's original Time Pilot. The Galaxian hardware could result in a more limited color palette, simpler sprites, and potentially fewer on-screen objects at once. However, the core gameplay – 360-degree shooting, time travel, and boss battles – remains intact, delivering a challenging classic arcade experience.
