In Super Zaxxon, players pilot an advanced fighter spaceship from a unique isometric perspective, creating a sense of depth and three-dimensional space. The primary objective is to navigate through perilous space environments, destroying flying enemies and enemy ground defenses. The game is notable for its faster pace and increased difficulty compared to its predecessor.

The player's ship is equipped with a continuous forward-firing laser. Players must skillfully maneuver the ship to dodge obstacles, enemy attacks, and critically, maintain the correct altitude via an altitude meter. Managing altitude is vital to avoid crashing into the ground or walls and to accurately target ground-based objectives like fuel tanks and fortresses.

A new and prominent feature in Super Zaxxon is the introduction of the 'Zaxxon Wall'. This is a massive, solid barrier that players must destroy section by section to create a path through it. This requires precision and quick reflexes. Fuel is a critical element; players must shoot fuel tanks to replenish their ship's energy. Running out of fuel means the ship will crash and be destroyed.

Each stage culminates in a confrontation with the giant Zaxxon robot or a large fortress. Players must identify weak points and attack continuously to destroy them. Super Zaxxon delivers a challenging arcade shooting experience, demanding precise control skills, quick reactions, and strategy to survive the relentless onslaught of enemies.
